Handy little bookReview date: 2009-12-05 Rating: 6 out of 10This is a handy little book to help someone with a few roman coins to roughly identity them. It concentrates on Obverses rather than Reverses to give an idea of the Emperor. The values given for the coins seem very high.Good Book for the Amateur CollectorReview date: 2007-07-25 Rating: 10 out of 10
For anyone with a keen interest in collecting Roman Coins this is an ideal book to have. Although by no means comprehensive it does cover most of the coins that are more readily available to the collector.
It is a fully updated Price guide of over 630 base metal Roman coins dated 241 BC - 498 AD, with their market values included.
The illustrations are adequate enough to be able to get an identification. Most of the obverse portraits and legends are illustrated as near to life size as possible. I could myself have wished for them a little larger, but the reverse of the coins is not dealt with in as much detail. The book touches on most aspects of coin collecting without going into great detail, but for its price and size it is a nice little book to have for the amateur collector.
On a personal note for the beginner: More coins are ruined or de-valued by `aggressive' cleaning than anything else. If in doubt, do not clean any coin.Uncleaned lots identified.Review date: 2005-02-18 Rating: 10 out of 10I have about 30 low value base metal Roman coins, mostly bought in uncleaned lots from ebay and other websites, and I'm thrilled to say that they are now all atributed with the reference numbers from this book, and I also have some idea of value. I had no idea who many of the Emperors were at first, and as yet I haven't found one that this book doesn't cover. The line drawings are especially useful, as you can clearly read the letters and compare them to the coin you are trying to attribute.
The lowest price Roman Coin Book that I know of, and worth every penny.
